What is a Science Expo?

My Science Expo is designed for Year levels 5 to 8.

It is a collection of posters, videos and hands-on activities to engage and teach students about a range of science fields:

  • chemistry

  • physics

  • NZ Flora & Fauna

  • human anatomy

  • meteorology

  • NZ geology and

  • our microscopic world

You choose up to 5 science fields and I will bring the Expo to your school.

What's new?

I'm also the Branch Manager of the South Auckland House of Science.

Expos will only be held on Monday - Wednesday.  Expos may be held on Thursday and Friday on even numbered term weeks. If your school is interested in the House of Science kits, email me at: southauckland@houseofscience.nz

NZ Flora & Fauna now has 3 modules to choose from.

Physics also has a new 'Simple Machines' module.

How long is the Expo?

During a one hour slot, two classes (approx. 50-60 students) rotate around five science fields or stations (of your choice). Each station is divided into 2 substations, allowing 10 groups to be spread out. The students have a worksheet to complete, which is tailored to your Expo. See "Details & Cost" for more information.

Why should your school have an Expo?

This is a great way to engage students in science in a fun & cost-effective way. Science Expo can be another tool in your science toolbox.  The hands-on activities really appeal to students and the feedback has been fantastic. I have tried to ensure the learning is relevant, with a NZ focus, and that the students can relate to it.  Please read the testimonials and see what students and teachers have said.

Teachers have commented how engaged the students are. One teacher commented how a differently-abled student was reading a poster and writing answers in his worksheet, something this boy has never done in class.

"The Yr 5 & 6 students really enjoyed the Science Expo and learned a lot. A week later, some are still buzzing about the different things they did and making connections to learning in the class. Thanks for showcasing science in a fun and exciting way"

Mrs J-B, Team Leader, Yr 5/6, Willowbank school

Science Expo is also a great way to activate teacher's interest in science .

Thanks for this week!  It was so good to see so many students engaged in the experiences and curious about science.  The teachers enjoyed learning alongside their students as well and are now inspired to create learning experiences that will keep the spark alive for our tamariki!
