NZ Flora & Fauna (Aotearoa ngāi tipu me ngāi kīrehe)

This topic now has 3 modules, you can choose which ever you think fits in with your school's enquiry or interests.

Module 1: General conservation issues

Possible information covered:

  • Kauri tree

  • Kauri dieback and myrtle rust

  • Conservation status (how are species assessed)

  • Examples of NZ threatened species

  • Threats to NZ flora & fauna (including predators, habitat loss etc)

Possible hands-on / interactive posters:

  • Match the eggs to the birds

  • Match the description to the fauna

  • Pest/predator or friend (students decide if the animal/plant pictured is a pest/predator or friend)

Module 2: Wetlands / Repo

A great module if your school has wetlands nearby

Information covered:

  • Types of Wetlands

  • Importance of wetlands

  • Flora & fauna of wetlands

Interactive posters:

  • Information cards relating to the Wetland Life poster

  • Match the photos of wetland plants to the illustrations on the poster

Module 3: Animal adaptations

This will focus on our native species. Information covered:

  • physical, behavioural and physiological adaptations

  • specific NZ examples like kiwi, kākāpō, kererū & weta

  • characteristics of mammals vs birds

Interactive posters:

  • match the specific adaptation to the NZ fauna
