Our microscopic world: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Penicillium chrysogenum.png

The Good

  • good bacteria (role of gut flora)

  • beneficial moulds (i.e. penicillium)

  • microorganisms and food

  • blood cells

  • others (pollen, plankton)

The Bad

  • disease causing bacteria & viruses

  • prevention (vaccination)

The Ugly

  • microscopic mites (dust mites, scabies)

  • protozoa (giardia)

Hands-on components/demonstrations include:

  • fermenting yeast

  • balloon inflation using yeast (from CO2 production)

  • some blue cheese

  • microscope with slides

  • digital microscope with objects to view
