science expo
bringing science to schools
Details
What does the school have to provide?
-
11 tables
-
TV & laptop for playing videos (for Meteorology or NZ Geology)
-
Your hall or other suitable large area
-
Print the worksheets (I will email this to you prior to the Expo. Format is doubled sided A4.)
-
Extra staff and/or parent helpers* (min 3, ideally 4) to assist with instruction and supervision. I will give brief training to the parent helpers. The classroom teachers can wander around the Expo and help where needed and enjoy the Expo with their learners.
*Parent/grandparent/community help is a great way to connect with the school and gives the helper a sense of being involved in student learning.
Keeping students safe
-
All equipment will be sanitised prior to the Expo
-
High touch areas (benches, hands on equipment) will be sanitised between each rotation
-
Students and staff should sanitise their hands upon entering and exiting the Expo.
What does the Expo provide?
I will provide:
-
all the posters and equipment (it takes about 30 minutes to set up)
-
a Parent helper recruitment form that details the expectations of the helpers
-
a tailored worksheet for your school's expo and an answer sheet.
The Expo in more detail
Here is a sample floor plan of 5 science fields/stations.
-
Each classroom will be divided into 5 groups. If two classes are attending, there will be 10 groups.
-
Each station has two sections A & B. This ensures the learners are spread out.
-
After 5-6 minutes, all groups will rotate in the same direction.
-
Parent helpers are required (the orange dots) for giving instructions or providing supervision.
-
Ms Lun will do time keeping and float around the expo to ensure everything is running smoothly.
-
If your school timetable allows, we can get through 8 classes in one day.
The Expo is flexible
If you prefer, you can choose 4 science topics/stations. Nothing is set in stone; Science Expo is very flexible.
Contact me to discuss how to maximise content for your Expo.
Perhaps you may like to start small - for example one whanau.
Composite classes: If your school chooses to run the Expo annually, the Expo can be modified so learners aren't seeing exactly the same material two years in a row. Plus, you can change out some of the topics.
Alternatively, you could run the expo biennially.
If your school has single year level classes, you could hold an expo annually but for one year level only i.e. Year 8 only.
Cost
2021 pricing
A minimum of $125 will apply to schools with less than 100 students attending the expo.
Where there are more than 100 students / attendees, the cost is $1.25 per student.
Sounds cheap? I do this for the love of science education.
NOTE: if you have less than 100 attendees, you can enquire about hiring me for "A Day of Science". We can plan an Expo (morning) plus other science activities in the afternoon. POA.
